Break Thru Pittsburgh

A rage room + mindfulness experience

How Did You Come Up With This?

I run a rage room out of my garage called Break Thru Pittsburgh. It’s a labor born of love and trauma.

An idea conceived after years of internalized meltdowns where the energy in my body would reach a fever pitch and beg to be released in ways that would be labeled as physically “aggressive”.

My body would be yelling at me to kick, punch, slam, or swing, but I grew up in a house where emotions were to be hidden and dealt with alone, quietly.

So I turned to other, maladaptive means of coping like self injury and truancy. But the urges to be physically “aggressive” never left.

I’ve heard other autistics describe meltdowns and overwhelm as the feeling of having a chamber inside them filled with steam that needs to be released, or like bees buzzing in your chest.

I deeply identify with these feelings, and I feel passionately that somatic outlets exist for these feelings that will help to ease the feelings and regulate the nervous system.

Throwing bottles at a wall and smashing them with a crowbar offers deep proprioceptive feedback (and excitement!) in two ways: exertion and impact.

Occupational therapists note that these forms of sensory experiences are deeply regulating, and based on client feedback almost everyone who attended one of my workshops came away feeling more grounded, calmer, and lighter; suggesting that their nervous systems were in a very regulated state.

My workshops aren’t just for autistics. I’ve facilitated workshops for over 100 people in the two years since I started offering them, and most participants experience calming effects.

I combine the sensory experience of throwing and smashing with journaling, intention setting, and mindfulness exercises for a powerful energetic experience.

I have tailored workshops for people to move through grief, rage, stress, breakups, and big life transitions. I found a formula that works well, and is very adaptable.

Making It More Accessible

I also believe that there are many options for people to access the benefits of sensory impact and exertion without the danger of breaking glass in their own home, or the need to hurt others or destroy property.

It can be easy to label all of these urges as “dangerous” but I think that they are only dangerous if no other outlet or support exists and people are forced to cope on their own.

It’s possible to learn to channel these feelings in healthy ways using a variety of tools and inexpensive equipment that are safe to use at home. To that end, I developed a virtual workshop called Rage Room at Home.

If you’re interested in a workshop, in person, or virtual, please contact me. I’d be happy to work with you.

In person workshops are held in my space in Pittsburgh, PA.

Pricing starts at $50 per person for an hour-long workshop.
